Curriculum Jan~Mar

These next few months, our haumana will be learning just a few new songs and then revamping some  they've already learned.  For 'uniki, na 'opio and na keiki kane will need to test out on basics, the oli kahea (entering chant), and hula motions and kahea (first word of each verse) for the following songs. Please have them bring their folders and practice daily or every other day for at least ten minutes. Kaikamahine class will not need to test out on kahea, just motions. Their songs are marked (*).
  • Kahana Malie*. (the song about kapa making) This is one of the songs the students will have to write and/or memorize. I've let them know that they will have to know, at minimum, the kahea for this song, but it would be awesome if they could memorize the entire song. I'm hoping they can get it by March/April.
  • Waikaloa. No changes. They should know this, including kahea and motions.
  • Anahola. I will be teaching implement hula this month after we brush up on the hula motions and kahea for this song.  Some keiki will be dancing with implements and others will dance without. They will practice both and then test out on which they can perform. Please have students bring in a milk jug (for ipu) and the 'ili'ili (rocks) if they had taken them home before for practice.  I will have the kala'au (sticks) at the studio along with 'uli'uli (feathered implements).  Please have them practice their kahea (first word of each verse).  Keiki kane are included in this hula.
  • Sophisticated Hula*. It is the same hula they've been dancing except they'll be fine tuning the Makaha Sons version with the Get Hep to Swing version. They do not need to know kahea for this.
New:
  • E Huli Ho'i Mai. New song. Fun song. I hope they enjoy it.
  • Oli Aloha. This is a new chant that I do not require them to know but would like them to learn.
  • New kahiko (to be filled and begun in February)
  • Maori dance?
  • Tahitian routine?

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou kakou!

Happy New Year 'oukou! Hope it was as awesome a holiday season for you all as it was for us. Too many cookies, lots of cocoa, Christmas light walks, and just good quality time with family.

And now back to hula. :) With such a long break, I'm wondering if the haumana have remembered anything over the break ~ I'm hoping so. We have just three months before we prepare for 'uniki (graduation) and just a couple new numbers to learn. Hoping they're up and ready for it.

TAHITIAN STUDENTS:
Because of the small class size, I've decided to cancel classes for this month. If we do not resume class next month, I will offer a few workshops instead. Each workshop will include basics and will likely be on a weekend. I will share more information by the end of this month.
