Ho'omaika'i kakou!

Sooooo proud of you all!  Hau'oli LOA au!  Ua pau ka hana (the work is done...for now :D). Hele ha'aheo kākou (you can all walk proud) for you have all worked hard and brought your studies to life and your aloha to all who was there to watch.  To my keiki hula a me (and) the Tahitian wahine (and Zabrina) o Na Pua o Keko'olani...Mahalo ā nui!

A special mahalo to all our mākuahine (moms) and mākua kāne who dedicate their time and efforts, sweat and smiles to their keiki. Thank you for helping them out. I'm so happy you are feeling the hālau hula feeling of 'ohana. It is how it should be. Mahalo nui loa!

Sunday (April 21) Keiki and Tahitian Classes

NO keiki hula class this Sunday. Please have your keiki well rested and ready to go for the show if they are dancing.  Read below for more details.  If your keiki are not performing and are not coming to watch the show at White Beach, we will see you at Tuesday's practice. :)

Apelila (April) Update

Halau Picnic
We will be having a halau picnic with Halau Hui Nohona Aloha at the Kadena Marina Cabanas on April 27th from 12:00 noon to 5:30pm. Please RSVP (with number of keiki) to Kanani or Nohea asap so that we can plan activities accordingly. Hawaiian Style - potluck, so please bring something to share. The sign up sheet for food is at the studio, or you can simply post a reply here on the blog.  Looking forward to games, hula, kanikapila (music), and sun! :)

This weekend's Performances

The line-ups for both shows are below. Please message me if you do not have part of an outfit/costume. I will have all the lei and flowers Friday and Saturday. If you have leftover green flat tape, please bring to Tuesday's practice so that others can use the rolls. Also, if you have time this week, Heidi, Chrissy, and I will be working on ti leaf lei to hand out at the performances. Please join us if you can during the day either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Mahalo!

Apelila (April) - Hiki no!

First off, Maika'i kelā to our keiki o KES for a wonderful job at the Sushi Stars Talent Show! Proud nui au :)

Next up, April 19th at Crowʻs Nest and April 21st at White Beach! Hiki nō!  Everyone who is participating should have received an email by now. The numbers are listed below as well as costumes. Please try to make it to as many of the upcoming practices as possible, including rehearsals on the next two Saturdays from 0930-1230ish.  I will also show how to make the skirts (and paʻu tops), briefly, before/after practices.  I'll have materials for the green and yellow skirts. If you need to make a pa'u top, please email me.  I also should have enough lei and flowers for borrowing.

As for this month's new songs, we will be learning at least one or two new numbers, focusing a lot on basics, and learning the words to Hawaii Aloha.

No hula Easter Sunday and Tuesday, April 2nd

Howzit kakou,

Hopefully everyone got the message last Tuesday, but no practice tomorrow (Easter Sunday) or Tuesday (middle school orientation). Not to worry, there are still four more Tuesdays in April and tomorrow is an extra March Sunday. We will resume practice next Sunday and likely have an extra practice or two before the 19th. 

I am also looking at having a short workshop before/after practice on Tuesday, April 9th to show how to make the costumes for the 19th and 21st. It will be simple, and the materials for the "grass" skirts will be provided. More on that later this week.

'Aue no ho'i! (oh my, oh my, oh my!) :D

It's been so long since my last post. Kala mai!  Since the new year began, I've been student teaching at Kadena Elementary and wrapping up my last two online classes to fulfill my Masters of Education requirements. A means to an end, and I'm looking forward to it all being PAU :) very, very soon.

As well, I hope this post finds everyone in good spirits and ready for spring! 

Our students have learned quite a few songs since we first started back in July. Ho'omaika'i'ana kakou! You guys have done awesome! As well, learning ʻolelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian language) has been successful and is an added bonus to being a hālau, or hula school. Very proud of you all!  We will continue to review the songs already learned in addition to learning several new ones.  Hiki no!

As we continue into the new year, there are some new items of interest to discuss:

• Performances: We've been requested to do a few performances in April, May, and June thus far; however, the details are still in the works, and I will be carefully choosing students depending on attendance, knowledge, and interest. Please have them practice regularly at home. Final selection is always up to the kumu :)
• Hula folders: If your keiki hasn't received one yet, they will have it by the next practice. Please review the songs with your keiki, and older keiki (10+), please bring them to class each week  
• Song selections: if you have any in mind, please feel free to email me and I’ll see what I can work on
• MP3s: I will no longer be emailing songs to you. I will print out lyrics along with artist name(s). This year, I'd like to promote island music and have students buy the music online. You are of course, welcome to simply record it while in the studio if you prefer. Again, no recording of the instructor(s) nor any of the chants
• Costumes: this year, I will not be sewing any costumes. I am hoping to be able to use Hui Nohona Aloha’s seamstress to streamline our costume production. With that being said, we may want to discuss fundraising at a later date when we need it
• Studio cleaning: For the past several months, my keiki, Danni, and I have been switching with Hui Nohona Aloha (our sister halau) to clean the studio each month. Their students take turns staying back each week to help clean the studio. I would like to ask for your kokua on this. Please find the volunteer sign-up sheet and cleaning details at the back of the studio. Mahalo a nui!
