Hoping this post finds you all in good health and good spirits. This month the keiki, their cousins, and I are in beautiful Anahola spending quality time with their grandma Kulamanu. From her window we can see King Kong, or what you have learned is Kalalea from the song Anahola. They go to the beach at Anahola Beach Park almost daily now and are taking day trips now and then to see the many sights Kaua'i has to offer. I will share them with you as we go along.

This month's song is appropriate as Kapa'a, a name place in the mele Hula O Makee, is right up the road. It is where Uncle Kaiona (Kaleo's dad) used to go to school and spent much of his teenage years. Pictures to follow for sure. In fact, we're on our way out here shortly so I have to finish this up. :)

July 1st beach picnic has been rescheduled for the 5th Tuesday. No extra tuition for this. Just fun time for the kids and a good time to pick shells or 'ili'ili for class. More details to come.

Please be patient during your first class each month. You will be doing quite a bit of basics, at which time also, parents - please also turn in your tuition so that Nohea can turn in rent on time each month. Since most, if not all, of the class will be basics, this is also a good time for you to ask questions to her while the students practice. Lastly, this is a copy/paste from a couple months ago. Please read: ... a friendly reminder about re-registration fees. The initial registration is Y4000 and Y1500 each year thereafter. If you are paying partial year, simply multiply each month by Y125. My apologies for not bringing it up earlier. It is not at the top of my list, but with a change in instructors soon, it'll help her with the small things like cleaning supplies, ink, paper, craft supplies, rentals, etc. Most, if not all, of tuition usually goes toward the studio fees. Registration helps make up for all other costs.

The kaona has the Makee as a woman who has deserted her lover and the Malulani, searching for her in the ʻIeʻie, channel between Kauaʻi and Oʻahu. There have always been vague stories about the Makee running aground in Kapaʻa. This article, published in the Ka Makaʻāinana, Buke VII, Ano Hou—Helu 1. ʻAoʻao 8. 	Kimo Maki Near Disaster. Tuesday Night past, when the steamship James Makee was in Kapaʻa, Kauaʻi, while the strong winds were blowing upon us and there as well, it was blown towards land while it attempted to head out to sea. It was stuck for two hours, and during this time, its cargo was unloaded, and the Malulani arrived to give assistance. Looking from the underside, it was seen that part of its keel [kila] was lost, two knees [kuli] and one beam [kua] at the stem were split, and there was a hole underneath, perhaps three feet below sea level at the base of the anchor. The Malulani accompanied it until arriving here in the morning of this past Friday. It will be placed atop the marine railway. (Makaainana, 1/4/1897, p. 8)

Hoping this post finds you all in good health and spirits. I miss all your pretty smiles already...even when you don't smile, run around in class, and leave candy on the floor. :) I still miss you, my hula keiki.

My sincerest apologies for not making it to class last week. Movers were still at the house, and we were starting the dreaded deep clean process. I hope you are all ho'olohe-ing to Anake Nohealani. She is trying her best at the go-get-em hula instruction. I know she's doing awesome.

Please mark your calendars for a beach picnic on July 1 @ 5:00-6:00. Location TBD. Araha beach, tentatively. Simply a day for the keiki to get together, enjoy, dance some hula, and gather some shells for upcoming songs. Bring food for you and your keiki. Less clean up and pack up. :) Also, no practice on the fifth Tuesday, July 29.

Lastly, business! ;) Please be sure to pay on time this month and every month thereafter. Rent for us is due the firstFriday of each month. If you don't bring rent to practice, simply text/call/Skype Nohea to meet her at Kadena Ed Center before the 1st Friday. Mahalo for your attention to this matter.

Na Opio will then join in and enter with the oli kahea, basics, wala'au/mo'olelo, and then combined songs and/or Tahitian. Pau ka papa kaikamahine at hapalua lima (kaikamahine class is done at 5:30), and na opio will then concentrate on their own new songs and review.

A big mahalo to Theresa for opening your home to all of us and to Kristie and Tiffany for your kokua. Good times and good laughs (on Chrissy's expense ;D). Much appreciated.

For those of you who have not made a lei po'o or 'i'i yet, I have the artificial ones they can use, but please at the very least make a ti leaf lei for them. Theresa, mahalo again and again...she is making extra 'i'i, as am I.

Also, moms, if you could please wear or bring something aqua/teal/turquoise/green for a top to wear during Me Ka Maluhia. I'd like all of you to at least stand in the back of the girls to follow me on this last song. White bottom if you have one, but any bottom will do.

I look forward to sharing this last performance and celebration with this halau. It has been an awesome and most humbling couple of years, and I will miss all of your keiki and you.  ...ok, and I'm looking forward to the food! :)

Aloha kakou,

Maika'i kelā me ku'u haumana! Mahalo ā nui 'oukou - fantastic show at White Beach Festival! So proud of you girls :D. Smiles all around. 

This week we were supposed to meet at Kadena Marina; however, I found out that it is closed on Tuesdays so the location has changed to the park across my house, 4-5pm. There's a small playground, a small pavilion, girls can have a short practice, I can show how to pick ti leaf, and how to make the lei po'o. If you already know how to pick ti leaf, we will only need a few leaves each (3-4), and the Okinawan ti leaf is fine for fillers. Again, not making the whole thing. It won't last to ho'ike.

I will be working that day, so I will need help gaji-ing the spot. (It's a first come, first serve so if Dez or Heidi or someone can show up a little early and sit in the pavilion, I'll leave some chairs and tables outside on my doorstep. :D)

Don't forget after school snacks and drinks for your little ones. See you all then.

Mahalo for everyone's kokua in making ti leaf lei for the performances...and to Dez and Heidi for grabbing the la'i. Looking forward to another awesome White Beach show this weekend. Please remember that there is a LOT of traffic, so plan ahead (as I repeat that to myself).

Next week, we will be meeting at Kadena Marina at 4pm. Just look for something aqua.  Please bring a chair and/or beach blanket and snacks for your kiddies. We will have a short practice followed by the lesson for lei po'o. It won't stay good till Ho'ike so it'll just be an intro.

Please, please, please if you are planning to leave the halau, let Nohea or I know when so she can plan accordingly. April update

Aloha kakou,

Hula will be at the studio tomorrow night (Apr 22). I will need to leave immediately after practice so whoever signed up for next week's cleaning, I will leave the key with you. Note: I have added a cleaning sign up page to the blog. :) 

Hula next week will be at Kadena Marina 4-530pm, given the weather is nice. I promise to teach lei making then :). However, we will not complete them since they won't stay good for ho'ike. We will work on the real one the following week, either during practice or at my house another day, likely Wednesday.

Also, Aunty Josa will be holding rehearsal on Wednesday 7:30-9:00 or Thursday from 8:00-9:00. Let me know if/when you can make it. I will be at Wednesday's practice only. Please review costumes on the blog (and attached). I will be handing out accessories (and costumes) tomorrow and am available during the week for help. Lynn, it will be cutting it close, but I will pick up Mahe'Alani's skirts and top Friday from the seamstress. I will bring to White Beach or meet you before then.

Theresa (Moani's mom) has kindly donated yellow tape for 'i'i's (tahitian hand pieces). It will be in the studio along with scissors and string. 

If you still need help with the Tahitian headpiece, please let me know.

'Uniki, update

Aloha kakou!

The date for 'uniki has changed - It will be on May 10th; however, our last hula class will still be on Tuesday, April 29th.  So much to do, so little time. ;)  We are hoping to get Rodriguez Pavilion for the location so that it is still outdoors but fully covered.  It will be a huge potluck/party so I'm really hoping most, if not all, of you can make it.

Since April has five Tuesdays, I'd like to take up all five for hula and preparations. As you will see in the line-up below, there are a few items we will definitely need to work on as a group.  If the weather is nice, we will meet up at the beach on the 22nd and/or the 29th. The other three/four classes will be at the studio.  At one of these meet-ups, I will also be giving out the lei and flower accessories. For whoever stays with the halau, please keep them at home. For those of you who are leaving after 'uniki, please return them to the studio for the halau to keep.  I appreciate it. Everyone, I will be working on using up all the material I have left over for the remainder of costumes we do not have. Please bare with me. When wrestling is over, I will have time to sit and wala'au with you all after practices.

I've attached the Tahitian songs, Pae Pae (entrance), Te Manu (both kaikamahine and 'opio versions) along with Symphony of Drums ('opio duos). Shayla and the boys will take the drumbeat at the end of the 'opio Te Manu with everyone else doing their duo with Symphony of Drums. I've noted the minutes/seconds for each group on the line up.

March Tahitian Workshop, 3/30 @10-12

Workshop date change onegaishimasu! :)  This month's workshop will be Sunday, March 30 from 10am to noon. I have also changed the song selection to an Ote'a called Pehe Tahiti Ora.  That is an iTunes link, but I will provide an edited version to everyone who attends the workshop. The cost (Y4000, pay upon arrival) and basic schedule will remain the same:

Tahitian Workshops

Monthly 'Ori workshops will be available in lieu of the weekly classes.  The dates are listed below along with the basic schedule.  Please sign up via comment or email. I will also leave a sign-up sheet in the studio. There is a 7 student minimum for each workshop and the cost is Y4000 per person per workshop. Ages 16+ (ages 10-16 must be able to endure the two-hour class to be considered). I will email/post whether there are enough students 5 days prior to each workshop.
